How might we make connectivity personal to everyone in the whole world?

Build the most adaptable business in the world.

OneWeb is transforming the world of connectivity and becoming a symbol of a truly connected world. Our mission was to deliver this new seamless connectivity to everyone, everywhere — from small schools in Africa to global corporation head quarters.

🚀 The challenge

OneWeb stands to turn the connectivity on its head and become synonymous with connectivity, integrating SDN /NFV and OneWeb’s own NGN satellite network with 55% global coverage. And in doing so OneWeb will become a magnet to aggregate and align telcos in a new federated connectivity model. BSS and OSS will become just a given; so the real challenge is to forget how a telco are and design how they should be - to re-imagined the connected world.

🚀 Answering the challenge

We began with the fundamental belief that our strategy needed to anticipate needs and adapt to deliver connectivity within the context of everyone, everywhere. This level of adoption is akin to how, in barely half a decade, the App Store expanded the notion of what smartphones could do. Overnight, OneWeb could shift the world to a meritocracy at an astonishing rate. As such, the business demands on OneWeb to scale and adapt were unprecedented. It became clear that our strategy needed to enable OneWeb to be the most adaptable business in the world.

To achieve this, we needed to create a composable experience and technology stack that could aggregate the right processes, tools, and content around every individual, their organisation, or even their technical know-how, anywhere in the world. In short, a system that could learn and adapt by identifying the user, their needs, and knowledge, and mould itself around them by assimilating implicit and explicit behavior to anticipate needs. We implemented a multifaceted solution, focusing on composability and integration to ensure OneWeb’s technology could meet the evolving needs of its diverse user base. The first step was to design a modular, composable architecture that allowed for easy integration and customisation. Each component was self-contained yet capable of operating in harmony with others, providing OneWeb with the flexibility to organize and distribute services quickly and at scale.

Central to this was the development of a personalisation engine that utilized AI and machine learning to analyze user data and surface a tailored interface, content, and experience so OneWeb could always be contextually relevant.

To support the rapid development and deployment of services, we implemented a Container Platform-as-a-Service (CaaS) and Experience-as-a-Service (EaaS). Built on top of an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platform, both the CaaS and EaaS allowed for the automated build and deployment of services. A key aspect of this approach was the introduction of a comprehensive design and content system. This provided a unified framework for generating experiences, ensuring consistency and coherence across all digital touchpoints, despite being highly personalized.

This increased level of flexibility is designed to grant OneWeb more control over resource allocation and scaling, helping the business to build a successful ecosystem automatically. It enabled the business to enter the market quickly and build upon solid foundations without waste. The combination of a CaaS solution, a personalization engine, contextual relevance, and a comprehensive design system ensured that OneWeb's technology stack was both powerful and adaptable.
